Cryptocurrency trading needs to be 24/7

Recommended Posts

I just realised that IG turn off their Crypto trading desk on Saturday mornings. I use IG for all stock trading, and would like to keep using them for Crypto CFD.  Unfortunately, its not possible...BTC moves fast and by holding a position over the weekend I risk being stopped out with significant loss.  Would be good if they opened the crypto desk 24/7

Im currently looking for another exchange that trades 24/7 but kind of hoping that IG change this in order to keep up with standard 24/7  trading..

agree.

TBF I think all markets should be - how long until this happens? We're a global people now and markets never sleep. But that's the underlying exchanges which will take a long time to change. IG can change crypto as there is an underlying market,

@Me7, I totally agree. I think Cryptos should be available to trade 24/7.

However, this question has been asked many times and I for one have asked this question several times a couple of years back and @JamesIG has answered it several times stating it was not possible and outlining the reasons why. This may be a very good time for him to update the IG Community with the latest position.

Yes, its a wild asset to trade as it is, but having the black out for 5 hours on a Saturday makes it impossible for me to trade through IG. Crypto doesn't sleep...Will be glad to hear something from @JamesIG

Currently there are no roadmapped plans to change our crypto offering or dealing hours. Whilst this incredibly new asset type has only been around for a few years (coinbase for example has only been around since 2012) the entire financial system has been built around a weekend downtime, and this has been something which we have been a part of. In the scheme of things crypto has only recently become popular.

Whilst on the surface it may seem easy to offer a truly 24/7 offering there are a number of additional parameters to consider such as required downtime for server maintenance / staffing / incident support etc.

As you stated there are a few hours during which the crypto markets at IG are closed.  Whilst we are continuing to review all options (as we do periodically for our entire business) there are no hard and fast plans in place to offer a truly continuous 24/7 trading environment for crypto I'm afraid.

    • US Dollar (DXY) Daily Price and Analysis US Q1 GDP may stall the greenback’s advance. A 20-year high nears for the US dollar. The multi-month US dollar rally continues with the greenback printing a fresh high today ahead of the first look at US Q1 GDP at 12.30 GMT. The US dollar basket (DXY) has been boosted by renewed weakness in the Euro and the Japanese Yen, as investors move from lower-yielding to higher-yielding currencies, while safe-haven flows continue to benefit the greenback. The US growth release later in the session is expected to show a sharp slowdown from the robust Q4 figure of 6.9%. The markets are currently pricing in growth of just 1% for the first three months of this year, with the slowdown mainly due to a reduction in inventory accrual over the quarter. This release is unlikely to move the greenback, unless there is a large miss or beat, as the Fed believe that 2022 US growth will be robust enough to let them tighten monetary policy sharply without damaging the economy. The latest US Core PCE data – the Fed’s preferred inflation reading – is released on Friday and this may have more effect on the US dollar than today’s GDP data. For all market moving economic data and events, see the DailyFX Calendar. The ongoing US dollar rally has been aided by weakness across a range of G7 currencies including the Euro, the Japanese Yen, and the British Pound. The Euro continues to battle with lowly growth expectations, exacerbated by energy concerns, the British Pound is mired by weak economic data, while the Japanese Yen is in freefall as the BoJ continues with its ultra-loose monetary policy.   The US dollar continues to press higher and looks set to break above 103.96, the March 2020 high. Above here the US dollar would be back at levels last seen nearly two decades ago. The March resistance will likely hold in the short-term, especially with month-end portfolio rebalancing at the end of the week, but US dollar strength is set to continue in the months ahead.
